the day he was born, he was given away to a catholic orphanage which was run by a small group of strict nuns and a priest. no information is known about his parents so he was named by one of the nuns and later baptized. from a young age he was an isolated little boy, finding comfort in books and only participating in choir activities due to his gifted voice. he had no friends, the other kids would either avoid him or bully him for years. he can only recall two people being important in his life: first, a nephilim called gabriel, who would visit the orphanage every now and then. matthew grew very fond of him very quickly, the nephilim being the only person who treated him with kindness and patience. but after matthew abandoned the country, they never saw each other again.the other person was girl named ivy, who defended him from the constant mistreatment he got from other kids. for years they were very close, sharing almost everything: food, snacks, gifts, and a bunkbed, they took care of each other the best they could. until an unfortunate event happened at the orphanage and ivy was never seen again.he was also, according to the nuns, a very sickly boy. he would get sick for days and wake up with no memories. nuns would tell him he fainted or that his fever got too high. he believed that, it added another reason why the other kids would stay away from him. this happened around the same time he developed a sensitivity to spiritual energies, and the shadows started to appear.

at first, they were small and they only stared at matthew at night for a few hours before disappearing. he only told the nuns about this, who seemed very open and even happy about that. they immediately told the priest, who started to take matthew to his trips to realize exorcisms around the village. this lasted for years, matthew saw and heard disturbing things, was exposed to danger and sometimes he was locked with violent individuals to see if he could reach out to whatever demons was possession those people. his sickness got worse during that time, until the fire.for reasons unknown yet, the orphanage caught on fire. many of the kids lost their lives, including ivy. matthew couldn’t deal with grief, after losing his only home and his only friend, he rebelled for days and attacked a nun. he only remembers screaming and throwing punches until everything went dark. when he woke up, he was told he got a fever again, ivy was never mentioned and neither was the fire. he never dared to ask again and life continued in a new orphanage in a different city. but he couldn’t shake the feeling something was wrong; shadows were growing bigger and coming closer to him every night. this place was becoming his personal hell.

as soon as he turned eighteen, he decided to study abroad and his good grades earned him a scholarship in harvard. a dream come true for him, he gathered all the money he had and moved to the u.s without looking back. when he arrived, he changed his name to matthew and he also decided to go for two majors, which implied even more hard work and an even more isolated life but he was willing to accept that for his future. the shadows disappeared for the next four years but he knew it wouldn’t last for long, that sense of safety was very fragile. eventually, after graduation, he moved back to south korea to start working as a lawyer.he started with small cases and earned a good reputation on his field of work, even if many people were underestimating him. soon his cases and his clients became more and more high profile and more complex and he unwillingly found his way into helping criminal organizations. he still visits church every week, finding comfort in the silence and the privacy it gives him. he holds his religious values very close to his heart but that has led him to struggle to accept his sexuality.matthew is, as of today, unaware of why the fire happened. he’s also unaware him and many other kids in the orphanage were being experimented on. in matthew’s case, his spiritual abilities were induced in painful tests that left him him unconscious and feverish for days. the experiments hardly worked on him but he was still forced to help with the exorcisms. those experiments, on the other hand, worked perfectly on ivy and before disappearing forever, she burned down the orphanage and escaped.
